December Luncheon - Utilizing Data and Core Studies in Carbon Capture Programs

This talk will look at some of the main risks in CCUS interactions with the reservoir, discuss how they can be examined using existing lab and geological techniques, and show some case studies for both hydrocarbon and CCUS projects to illustrate this.

Topic: Utilizing Data and Core Studies in Carbon Capture Programs

Abstract:

As more Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects. move towards reality, we are starting to understand the type of data and core studies that are needed to assist with reservoir characterization and modelling. A key area is not necessarily examined, however: what impact do the well drilling/conversion operations and injection/production of carbon dioxide have on the reservoir itself? Operational fluids interacting with the reservoir, incompatibility between the reservoir minerals and CO2, fluid interactions with CO2 causing scaling, injection of dense phase causing fines migration/sanding, and long-term interactions between the rock and fluids can all cause unexpected behaviours. Utilizing Formation Damage techniques – widely used in geological hydrocarbon reservoirs - in order to study CCUS-specific issues is therefore an opportunity to mimimize issues and improve hydrocarbon recovery. This talk will look at some of the main risks in CCUS interactions with the reservoir, discuss how they can be examined using existing lab and geological techniques, and show some case studies for both hydrocarbon and CCUS projects to illustrate this.
