Dallas Geological Society Members and Friends,

Part of our stated purpose in our ByLaws is to “promote education in earth science”.  We have accomplished this for longer than I can remember through the Scholarship Committee which every year invites, selects, and awards funds to students enrolled in the study of geology who are from the Dallas area.  There are 5 funds named in honor of former members of the DGS, the Helsewick, Shepherd, Sistrunk, Stanley and Dodge Scholarships.  Since 1999 these funds have been administered by the Communities Foundation of Dallas, although the selection of recipients has been through the Scholarship Committee of the DGS.  Charlotte Klenk has chaired this committee forever, but since she has accepted the challenge of higher office, I’ve been honored with the opportunity to continue this tradition.

I have three requests.  First, please consider volunteering to serve with me on this committee.  The responsibility is slight but the gratification is priceless.  My contact numbers are listed below.  Second, please consider the DGS Scholarship Fund in your yearend giving.  You know how abysmal interest rates are, and education costs are increasing in a phenomenal way.  Finally, please pass on the word to any geology students you know to apply for one of our ‘free money’ grants.

Thank you for your attention,

Valary L Schulz
Chair, DGS Scholarship Committee
