Dallas Geological Luncheon: Rocks and Logs: An Upper Frio Case Study of How Geology Impacts Reservoir Management

Dallas Geological Luncheon: Rocks and Logs: An Upper Frio Case Study of How Geology Impacts Reservoir Management

Tues, May 9th, 11:30am-1:00pm

In today’s economically driven oil and gas industry, rock material and logs are often over-simplified to scale up for integration in seismic volumes or geomodels. These are in turn fed into reservoir simulations.  This talk highlights the value of rock and log integration and makes a case for paying attention to the details.

Denbury Resources Inc. acquired several mature fields in the SE of the Texas Gulf Coast with the intent to revitalize them with tertiary CO2 floods. A brief overview of a Denbury’s upper Frio field is followed by simple observations and some details from of 2 whole core and a suite SWC.  This is followed by some examples how rock data dovetail with open-hole and cased-hole logs.  Some comments on how expectations changed with revised geologic and petrophysical models and resultant modifications to reservoir management.  Will comment on some best practices on open-hole data acquisition.
