Abstract

In 2005, Projecto PaleoAngola began an extensive investigation of fossiliferous coastal sediments representing the near shore region of the growing South Atlantic Ocean. Outcrops in Angola record Early Cretaceous rifting and Late Cretaceous marine transgression over the main boundary fault of the African craton. Discoveries of fossil vertebrates include Angolatitan (the first dinosaur found in Angola), abundant and new marine reptiles (some similar to those found in Texas), footprints in the diamond mine at Catoca, new fossil whales, and in Oligocene rocks of Cabinda, a tooth of the oldest large ape found in Africa.

Instructions for DGS Online Membership Renewal

1. Log in to the DGS website.

NOTE: All current and past members of the DGS already have a login set up for this Website. Please do not register again, as the site will not recognize you as a member. If you cannot remember your username and password contact the DGS webmaster for this information.

2. After you successfully login, click on the link under the tabs that has your username in bold font. This link can be found on the right side of the page.

3. This is your profile page. On the left column of your profile page is your “Member Info.” Click on your member ID number in blue font.

4. In your most recent record (there may be more than one) there will be a Renewal link highlighted in yellow. Click on this link to bring up the renewal form.

5. On the renewal form, your membership type will already be selected along with the appropriate membership fee. Choose a payment method (credit card or check). We prefer a credit card for the fastest online processing.

6. The next section, "Complete the Application" will allow you to update your membership details and contact information. Please include at least one personal email address. If you know your contact information is complete and up-to-date, you can check “I am done, my application is complete.” If not, select “I still need to make changes in my application.” You must choose one option or the other to continue the online renewal.

7. Click on the Renew Membership button to bring up another form where you can enter your payment information and complete the transaction.

Recently, I made a brief presentation to your organization at a luncheon meeting about the Foundation For Energy Education (FFEE) and their collaboration with the Offshore Energy Center’s (OEC) Mobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU). These six MOLUs are hands on activities about energy and the technologies and sciences involved with the oil and gas industry. They are very educational for 5^th-8^th graders and as the attached brochure says “Help make science and technology come alive for your students”.

As a board member of the FFEE, I would like to bring these units to Dallas for a week in January, if possible. The approximate cost to transport and the staff to man these units is approximately $10,000 per week. Perhaps your company or organization could fund the entire $10,000 or make a contribution toward the $10,000 or if all the members of SIPES, DGS & SPE could make a personal $100 donation or more we could fund this project.

Incase you are not aware, our industry is under attack by the TV industry. HBO – Gasland movie; CBS – 60 minutes – Shaleionaires and CSI – Fracking. No doubt we need to educate the masses, but we also need to educate our children about the need and benefits of fossil fuels, plus invigorate them to think about a scientific career.

Please send your or your companies’ donation to Foundation For Energy Education, 3701 Kirby Drive, Suite 962, Houston, Texas 77098. Please mark ‘Dallas MOLU’ in the memo portion of your check, plus a return address for a return receipt. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization; therefore, the donation is tax deductible. Obviously, if we raise more than $10,000 we can have the MOLUs stay longer in Dallas and reach more of our schools.
