Locating high-productivity areas of tight gas-sand reservoirs using LF seismic surveys at Jonah and Pindale fields.

Birkelo, B., A. Goertz, and K. Cieślik, Spectraseis AG and E. LaBarre, EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc

Jonah and Pindale fields in southwest Wyoming are prolific tight gas reservoirs. Jonah may have up to 8 TCF of recoverable gas, and estimates at Pinedale exceed 27 TCF. Primary production is from more than 5000 feet of discontinuous, sandstones from Upper Cretaceous Lance and Mesa Verde Formations. A low-frequency passive seismic survey was acquired over the Jonah and Pinedale gas fields to verify whether changes in the ambient seismic wave field could discriminate the higher productivity areas. The 2D profiles of the survey crossed the field in places that show maximum contrast in well productivity. As part of the ambient wave-field characterization (AWC) processing, the anthropogenic noise generated by the operations and the infrastructure of the field was captured and analyzed. Results of this analysis show that the AWC seismic attributes correlate well to reservoir properties like estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) and hydrocarbon pore thickness (HPT or SgPhiH) while the anthropogenic noise was not responsible for the measured AWC seismic signal anomaly. This opens the door to the use of AWC seismic surveys to extend existing tight gas-sand fields and to locating the high-productivity areas in tight gas-sand exploration plays.

Brad Birkelo is VP Geosciences at Spectraseis, where his work focuses on further developing microseismic and passive seismic techniques and integrating these data with conventional oil & gas data.
Prior to joining Spectraseis, Brad managed the Houston office of Digital Prospectors, Inc., an oil and gas consulting firm and, prior to this, worked for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Odessa, Texas where he processed and interpreted seismic data on numerous exploration and development projects. Brad received his MS in Geophysics from The University of Kansas (1987) and degrees from the University of Minnesota (BS Geology, 1982 and BS Geophysics, 1983). Brad served as SEG Secretary-Treasurer in 2006-07 and is an active member of the SEG, AAPG, EAGE, Denver Geophysical Society, and the Geophysical Society of Houston. The SEG awarded him Life Membership in 2010.

Alaska North Slope Exploration and Development: Pioneer's Arctic Experience

Pioneer Natural Resource has been conducting E&P operations on Alaska's North Slope since 2004. Several plays were tested across the area, resulting in an offshore development, Oooguruk, which produces from horizontally drilled laterals, some undulating. The three target reservoirs are reached from a single drill site, ODS, and is conducted from a man-made island approximately 5 miles offshore in the Beaufort Sea. Although a prolific oil basin, and relatively shallow target zones, the project faces many challenges. Rock quality, reservoir pressure management through injection, and steep operating costs in a challenging environment combine to make this project a world class investment with world class operational obstacles. A range of these challenges and mitigations will be presented and discussed. Pioneer’s strong commitment to operating in an environmentally sensitive manner resulted in no wildlife harmed during the assembly of this material or during the life of the project.

Event Details:

The petroleum geology of and recent E&P activity in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq

Dr. Jim Granath – Dynamic Global Advisors

Dr. Tim Wawrzyniec – The Lidar Guys

Kurdistan lies at the northwestern end of the Zagros Foldbelt, which is an active tectonic domain that is also a highly prospective and productive oil and gas province. The Kurdistan section of the fold belt is the site of recent major discoveries, including Shaikan, Akri Bijeel, Sheikh Adi, Atrush, Swara Tika, Miran West, Taq Taq, and Tawke.

The Zagros Foldbelt borders the northern and northwestern Arabian Plate. Conditions suitable for hydrocarbon accumulation occurred on the Arabian plate to the southwest of the Zagros. Subsequent deformation along this plate margin modified and enhanced the occurrence of hydrocarbons along the deformed Zagros Foldbelt.

The early Paleozoic history of this province was dominated by clastic deposition, which was followed by deposition of several source-seal-reservoir triplets during the Mesozoic including potential source rock intervals inn the Triassic, Middle Jurassic, Upper Jurassic, Lower Cretaceous, and Middle Cretaceous. Source rocks are intraformational shale or organic rich carbonates. Seals are shales or extremely thick anhydrite beds.

Carbonates dominate the reservoirs of the Mesozoic stable platform of the Zagros Foldbelt. Eight hydrocarbon-bearing formations (reservoirs) are present in most discoveries. All are of Mesozoic age, from the Cretaceous to Triassic. They are the Sarmord, Barsarin, Sargelu, Alan, Mus, Butmah, Baluti, Kurra Chine Formations.

Recent exploration activity has been very successful for small and medium-sized companies that ventured early into Kurdistan. Numerous structures have been tested with results of resources of several to tens of billion barrels each. Wells have been tested at rates of tens of thousands of barrels per day. The recent entry of US independents and a supermajor will further accelerate activity.

The conventional wisdom is that “the area has simple and well understood geology and is largely unexplored with uncomplicated structures most which are expressed at the surface.” With more data and continued study of the surface and subsurface we find this statement not to be accurate. The true structural and stratigraphic aspects of the area are more complicated than first thought.

Kurdistan has significant potential and is experiencing some of the most active exploration efforts in the world. This presentation will build on work for a number of clients during the last few years involving integrated subsurface and surface interpretation.

 Abstract

In 2005, Projecto PaleoAngola began an extensive investigation of fossiliferous coastal sediments representing the near shore region of the growing South Atlantic Ocean. Outcrops in Angola record Early Cretaceous rifting and Late Cretaceous marine transgression over the main boundary fault of the African craton. Discoveries of fossil vertebrates include Angolatitan (the first dinosaur found in Angola), abundant and new marine reptiles (some similar to those found in Texas), footprints in the diamond mine at Catoca, new fossil whales, and in Oligocene rocks of Cabinda, a tooth of the oldest large ape found in Africa.

Recently, I made a brief presentation to your organization at a luncheon meeting about the Foundation For Energy Education (FFEE) and their collaboration with the Offshore Energy Center’s (OEC) Mobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU). These six MOLUs are hands on activities about energy and the technologies and sciences involved with the oil and gas industry. They are very educational for 5th-8th graders and as the attached brochure says “Help make science and technology come alive for your students”.

As a board member of the FFEE, I would like to bring these units to Dallas for a week in January, if possible. The approximate cost to transport and the staff to man these units is approximately $10,000 per week. Perhaps your company or organization could fund the entire $10,000 or make a contribution toward the $10,000 or if all the members of SIPES, DGS & SPE could make a personal $100 donation or more we could fund this project.

Incase you are not aware, our industry is under attack by the TV industry. HBO – Gasland movie; CBS – 60 minutes – Shaleionaires and CSI – Fracking. No doubt we need to educate the masses, but we also need to educate our children about the need and benefits of fossil fuels, plus invigorate them to think about a scientific career.

Please send your or your companies’ donation to Foundation For Energy Education, 3701 Kirby Drive, Suite 962, Houston, Texas 77098. Please mark ‘Dallas MOLU’ in the memo portion of your check, plus a return address for a return receipt. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization; therefore, the donation is tax deductible. Obviously, if we raise more than $10,000 we can have the MOLUs stay longer in Dallas and reach more of our schools.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this program.

In addition, if you or your company would like to become a member of the Foundation for Energy Education, please go to their website at www.foundationforenergyeducation.org.
