Event Description
The Opening of the North Atlantic
or
Who Pushed Greenland Around?
The opening of the North Atlantic started in the Early Cretaceous between the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and Iberia. Initially, the rift progressed into the Labrador Sea between North America and Greenland, but eventually, the spreading ridge ended up to find its way into the Arctic Basin through the current North Atlantic and the Fram Strait. Hence, at the early rifting stages, Greenland was separated from North America and moved with Eurasia, but then changed its mind and joined North America again. Since then, Greenland and Eurasia separate at a rate of about 2 cm per year.
This talk will review the opening history and provide more detailed insights into two processes which shaped the North Atlantic crust and its margins, i) extensional tectonics at the Norwegian Continental Margin, and the interaction of Greenland and the Iceland hotspot.
