Gas hydrate, which is essentially methane in ice, is a potentially important worldwide energy resource that could one day supplement domestic and world-wide natural gas resources.  There is evidence of significant in-place gas hydrateresources in offshore deepwater areas of the world.
Earlier assessments of gas hydrate resources in the United States followed the protocol used for the assessment of conventional oil and natural gas resource where sizes and frequencies of occurrences were specified by expert judgment.  More recently, research and data availability have lead the U.S Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to develop a mass-balance cell-based model using stochastic simulation to obtain estimates of available gas hydrate resources.
The principal components of the mass balance model are a subsea floor container, the fraction of container volume that may be filled with hydrate, and available charge.  The distribution of resources is estimated via stochastic simulation.
Preliminary in-place results have been published for the Gulf of Mexico where the assessment model structure consists of over 200,000 cells that measure 2.32 km2.   Models are currently being developed for the Atlantic, Pacific and Alaska Federal Offshore regions.

Dr. John H (Jack) Schuenemeyer, President of Southwest Statistical Consulting, located in southwest Colorado, USA, has over 35 years’ experience as a statistical consultant, teacher, and researcher specializing in energy and earth science applications.
Dr. Schuenemeyer is Professor Emeritus of Statistics, Geography, and Geology at the University of Delaware.  He holds a PhD in Statistics from the University of Georgia and degrees in Applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado.
He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association .  He is a recipient of the International Association of Mathematical Geoscientists (IAMG) Griffith’s Award for outstanding teaching.  He is IAMG’s 2011-2012 Distinguished Lecturer.
He is currently a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Committee on Resource Evaluation, and is a member of the American Statistical Association Committee on Energy Statistics.
He has published over 100 research papers and is the coauthor of a recently published book, Statistics for Earth and Environmental Scientists.

Biography

The International Association of Mathematical Geology named Dr. Schuenemeyer  as their 2012 Distinguished Lecturer.  Over the last several months, he has been touring Europe and Asia delivering talks pertinent to various audiences.

Dr. Schuenemeyer is president of Southwest Statistical Consulting, LLC.  He has been active as a statistical consultant for over 30 years.  He is a Professor Emeritus of Statistics, Geography, and Geology at the University of Delaware, where he served as a faculty member in Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1976-1998 and directed the statistical consulting center at the University.  He was also a research mathematical statistician for the US Geological Survey.  In 1991, Dr. Schuenemeyer was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA).  He is the recipient of the 2004 John Cedric Griffiths Teaching Award of the International Association for Mathematical Geology.

Dr. Schuenemeyer has served as a consultant to organizations including the US Department of the Interior, NBC News, and the PGA Tour. He has been a leader in university-based statistical consulting and education.  He served as an advisor for graduate students in climatology whose topics included snow melt, global warming, and health indices related to climate.  He authored over 100 research publications, has given numerous invited talks and conducted workshops for scientists from industry, government and education.

He has developed methodology for the assessment of oil and gas resources in northern Alaska and gas hydrates in the US Federal offshore.  His interests include data analysis, model development and evaluation, spatial statistics and graphics.

He has served as a reviewer for numerous journals and was a prime organizer of the national ASA Section on Statistical Consulting.  He has served as chair of the U.S. National Committee for Mathematical Geology, chair of the ASA’s Committee for Energy Statistics and vice president of Mathematical Geologists of the US.  He is a member of the Committee on Resource Evaluation for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Dr. Schuenemeyer received a BS degree in applied mathematics in 1969 and an MS degree in mathematics in 1971 from the University of Colorado.  He received a PhD in statistics from the University of Georgia in 1975.
